Sound proof floors.
This is assuming that the noise you wish to stop is coming from below (airborne) rather than the impact noise from your footfalls. .

Sound proof flooring.
Initially you have to seal up any gaps that exist where the floorboards butt up against each other. This can be done using an acoustic sealant effectively making the floor airtight. Once this has been done you then need to fix a minimum of 2 layers of sound proof matting over the floor boards. This matting needs to be a mass-loaded vinyl barrier, it will have been fortified with a heavy substance so that it absorbs the sound waves instead of letting them through. This is often not enough of a solution. A better solution would be to pull the floorboards up first before sealing them and to fill the spaces between the joists with a sound absorbing material. Acoustic mineral wool or acoustic quilting can be used for this purpose. If you wish you can then replace the existing underlay with a sound absorbing underlay. This will have a minimal effect on the airborne noise but it will soften any impact noise for your neighbours. |
